charming
I had become quite familiar with the voice and songs of Carlos Gardel without having seen him performing any of them. He used to sing 2 to 4 songs per movie. I love all his songs and couldn't decide which movie to pick, so I decided to dive and pick the unsure one with 4 movies! On Amazon site, there is no image of the cover, the only review does not talk about the DVD's, and the producer's comments list only the songs. The good surprise for me was that all the movies were in Spanish (no English version), with subtitles in English or Spanish, so you can practice your spanish. But the English subtitles have been forgotten for the first one (El dia que me quieras). The movies are not too long, so I watched the 4 of them in a row. Are the flaws due to the CD being made in Argentine? There are no extras on the DVD's, no comments, no history. Considering the high price of the package, and the amount of information easily available on this most famous tango singer of all times, the production company could have made an effort to add something else to the movies, on the extra section. These set aside, I was delighted to see Carlos Gardel perform those songs and play in those movies. It is neither superior acting nor incredible scripts, but the man is bigger than life. His facial expressions, eyebrows, eyes, head (and body) movements were just so in phase with what I imagined from his voice. It is absolutely charming. Gardel had this huge genuine smile on his face. The last movie, Tango in Broadway, is the lightest of all, comedy wise. He just let himself go, obviously enjoying himself and the company of those babes. But even the other serious stories are quite entertaining. There are also at least one or two scenes of Tango dancing in each movie, including Carlos Gardel dancing them. It is so nice to see those guys perform Argentine Tango the "Buenos Aires streets" way.Of course, you need to care for black and white movies. I don't think there has been any re-work or remastering, the title jumps a little, there is a little noise scratch like from the old grammaphones. I just take it as a collectible, but I don't know if there are remasterized copies of those available.

Stellar!
I was born in Argentina and came to the U.S. at 7 years of age. For 43 years my Mom spoke of Carlos Gardel as the epitome of tango icons. She always said with a sigh that she would probably never see his movies again. Well, guess what happens in 2006?---Amazon and the internet and she gets 4 movies for Christmas! She tells me they play exactly like they did when she saw them as a wee little girl. Amazon and the Argentines that put this together have made my Mom very happy. The discs have a few extras and it's a simple package. For collector's or vintage film buffs, my opinion is that the collection is great. Thanks a lot Amazon for making my Mom's dream come true!

Movies Do Not Play Fully
I got the set of 4 as a present for my mom. We watched 2 of them together. Quality was poor, as I expected, but both movies began freezing about halfway through. After about 15 minutes of stop 'n go, the movie just "ended" and showed a logo. So it's good for the 1st half of the movie. I would never sell a product like this. I didn't watch the other 2, but even at 50%, it's a bad purchase. Very disappointed.

Abuelo porteño
Gladly surprised about the good and clear DVD reproduction, of these old films. Occasionally the English subs. are not following closely the "porteños" language. I am very pleased with the purchase.

A great $ deal- movies are not well preserved.
Four rare movies for the price of one? A very good deal. It is great finding these rare Gardel movies, but the film quality is only passable, the dialog is at times unintelligible, but the songs are always great.

Four Stars
Very good.

Bad Quality.
The transfer in this set is of very-poor quality. Save your money. The movie EL DIA QUE ME QUIERAS has a reasonable transfer in the stand alone DVD, which I also bought.

Carlitos - an icon
Carlos Gardel is the greatest Argentine icon. It is said of him that he sings better for every day that goes -even if he died in a plane crash in 1935. These four films were made when his career was at its best. They were produced by Paramount in the United States, just months before his tragic decease. One has to look at them with "historical perspective". Seen with today's eyes, the films are bad and corny, badly acted and with a silly sentimentality. They were made for the sole purpose of letting Gardel's legion of admirers in the whole American continent get a close view of this good looking, pleasant man with a wonderful and unique voice, when there was no such a thing as television, and record players were not available to everybody. It worked then, it would not have worked today of course. It achieved its purpose. Today, those of us who agree that no one has surpassed Gardel in singing tangos, view these films with sympathy, roar with laughter at the wrong moments, and cry with genuine tears at the end. But the songs are fantastic, beautiful, unforgettable and remain classical. These films are recommended both for those who love Gardel, and for those who had never heard of him. Never too late! At the same time, they give a glimpse of what society was in those days, their values and expectations. We enjoyed them thoroughly. Nothing wrong to say about the quality, either, taking in consideration that they are very old.

FOUR FILMS OF THE TANGO KING
The overall quality of the films was quite good. Though Gardel was a singer, his acting was "quite modern". And now I saw with my own eyes how charismatic performer he was.But to my great surprise and disappointment I found that some famous scenes (songs) were missing:EL DIA QUE ME QUIERAS (THE DAY YOU LOVE ME):-the song "Guitarra mía" was missingTANGO BAR:-the song "Los ojos de mi moza" was missingThese are the remarks of a perfectionist. I hope that some day the complete versions of these films could be obtained on DVD (perhaps through Paramount?).
