Underrated second cast delivers, plus great writing and high production values
I've been a "Dark" fan since it premiered on SNICK when I was 11. It was my favorite live-action show back then. I never saw the second series / cast until I recently started watching the show again online, and I strongly feel that these are underrated episodes. The second cast is *different* than the first, and certainly lacks Gary's odd charisma and of course I miss my favorites Frank and Kiki, but these new kids (plus a startlingly grown-up Tucker) do a great job and bring their own vibe. Tucker, if you can believe it, is even *nerdier* than Gary was, and Vange kind of picks up where Kiki left off.The writing on these shows is really just as good as the *average* original-cast episode. It's true that none of these are on the classic level of "Laughing in the Dark," "Prom Queen," or "Old Man Corcoran," but these are solid scripts and well-acted, even the campy "Gruesome Gourmets." I agree with the reviewer who said that the Tamagotchi-lampooning "Virtual Pets" probably should have been left off here, though -- that one is on the weak side, though it probably seemed very clever-topical at the time.Back to the good part : you get the unsettling "Forever Game," the heavy-handed but entertaining "Misfortune Cookie," and one of the best villians ever in the A+ grade "Zombie Dice." Plus the aforementioned "Gruesome Gourmets," which has one of the best supporting characters ever in the meathead Chuck, not to mention a great semi-twist ending. And the acting and production are at least as good, and probably somewhat better, than they were in the original run. There are a few things that prevent this from being a 5-star set, and they are as follows :1) "Virtual Pets" should have been swapped for a better episode. The "favorites, specially chosen" rap on the package is jive, these are just the first six episodes of the sixth season.2) The authoring and packaging on the DVD is pretty shoddy, though the functionality of the DVD is fine,3) I feel like (and original prices for other "Dark" collections support the view that) they should have included more episodes for this price. Especially the AWESOME 7th season posse three-parter "Tale of the Silver Sight," or at least the rest of the 6th season. Come ON!Those points aside, I still think this is a good value for getting some "Dark" in DVD quality (which beats streaming by a mile) and, as another reviewer pointed out, showing support for the series to increase the chances that more seasons will be reissued in the US at a decent price. Finally, if you've avoided this set because the 2nd cast / series gets a bad rap, give these a try. Watch with an open mind, as you did back in the day, and you'll likely be as stoked as I was. It's worth it!

I wish my son could have the Snick experience!
Please know that this 2 disc set has ONLY a total of SIX episodes. I knew this when I bought it, but only because I read some reviews (# of episodes wasn't listed in description). I can't be disappointed, because frankly Goosebumps is packaged similarly.I had set out to buy the complete series of AYAOTD but between living in US and apparently licensing difficulties, that won't be happening. Sad face.Just as good as I remember. Costs way less than one trip to the movie theatre, and I already knew I'd enjoy it.One last funny note- The outside of the case looks good, but when I flipped it open, the printing on the inside is backwards. All of it.

Scary, but not too scary
My older kids loved this show, and I must say when I was watching it with them I too enjoyed it. They watched it when it was a regular series on Nickolodeon, but I bought this video for my younger kids now (who are the age my older ones were when they first watched it) in hopes they would enjoy it as much. They LOVED it. They watched the entire video set in one day. I plan to buy the rest of the series now that I know how much they enjoyed it.

Tale of the Accidental Order
This was an excellent show. However, this DVD was not the 1st Season of the show that I thought I was ordering. Neither, was it of the original cast. Its good, too. But, I don't make it a practice to buy tapes or dvd's (though some old mix collections from the 80's I wouldn't mind haveing purchased) that only have a few shows. This one has 2 dvd's with 3 shows on each.

Great throwback!
I loved this show as a kid growing up! I remember several stories and was excited to see them on this DVD set. It arrived quickly, and was just as I remembered. It's fun and thrilling to watch again. I showed my cousins (8-10 years old) and they loved watching them as well! More mystery than scary.

Amazing!
Great Product & Great 2 Seasons. Can't Wait to Purchase Seasons 3 &4! Fun Nostalgic trip & Fun to have with my Goosebummps Collection. Wish they would release seasons 5, 6 & 7....little disappointed by that. BY THE WAY: For those who are curious the boxset is more or less the same as the Goosebumps collection one except there are only 4 discs in total covering the two seasons. One Query: Finished the first disc and realised the opening creepy music was absent throughout that disc? Does it begin to add the music in future episodes or is it gone from the whole boxset as it would be disappointing?I guess I shall soon find out but if I could get an answer now it would be helpful

From a time long ago, when children's TV was actually good
Are You Afraid Of The Dark? was a Canadian TV horror show for kids that ran from 1991-96, it was about a group of early teens called "the midnight society" that would meet in the woods at midnight once a week and tell horror stories whilst sat around a fire. I was eight when the show first aired and thirteen when it ended, so I was probably part of the show's target audience when it first aired.Series 1 & 2 is the first 26 episodes that were made, and although the majority of episodes are really good, there were a few stinkers. Almost all shows tend to have ups and downs in the early stages, and this show was no different. When they got it right, they produced some outstanding episodes that despite being a show aimed at kids, got them a pretty big adult following due to the excellent stories and great writing. Not very scary as to be expected in a children's show, but some episodes are pretty creepy and others actually almost brought a tear to the eye with sad endings. The opening and closing scenes tended to be quite funny, and after time you almost felt part of the group sat around the fire with them. The members of the group all had their own distinct personalities and their stories reflected it, Gary for example would normally tell stories about magic. There were two recurring characters that would show up in different stories every once in a while, the owner of the Magic Mansion called Sardo (accent on the do), and the sinister and mysterious Dr. Vink (with a va-va-va). I was actually surprised how much I still enjoyed this show as a 26-year-old man, which is testament to how good a show this was, especially compared to the tripe aimed at the lowest common denominator that kids are given now.The fact that series 1 & 2 are available together at such a low price is brilliant, as the show seems to be very hard to find in America with people spending up to $300 for individual series. I would have given it five stars but there were a couple of poor episodes where as series 3 & 4 was much more consistent without quite reaching the same heights, also no effort seems to have gone into giving us extras. It would have been nice to have a documentary with the members of the midnight society as adults, or some commentaries on the stand out episodes. Are You Afraid Of The Dark? still holds up very well today, great for children and adults. Despite buying it mostly for nostalgic reasons, I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the show. You can't go wrong at £8-12 for two series worth, and well worth getting just to show kids that once upon a time children's TV was actually good. Hopefully series 5 will get released, as it seems a shame to release four series and not the fifth and last of the original show. The show did run for another two series between 1999-2000, with a different cast. It never reached anywhere near the quality of 1-5, but did star a young Elisha Cuthbert as a midnight society member.

Sends you right back to the 90's
I bought this as I loved the show as a kid but I was a bit worried that it might not hold the same appeal now that I'm older. Upon first putting it on, I must admit, some of the acting was shockingly bad, but after an episode or two it became part of the appeal and charm of the show.I haven't watched them all yet, but the stories are a bit hit and miss. The majority have been good so far though. I would say this is would be a good buy if you watched the show growing up and want a blast from the past! The theme music still creeps me out!
