Chainmail has been an effective and critical piece of armor since roughly the 4th century B.C. In fact, a study conducted at Leeds University determined that chain mail "is almost impossible to penetrate using any conventional medieval weapon." In modern times it is used by butchers to protect them from meat packing equipment. They also often wear a chain mail glove to protect their hands when cutting meat. Another common modern use is reenactment, particularly of the renaissance.
