Q: Do these have a thin elastic running along the top of the waistband which can create a muffin top? Or just one thick band?

No skinny elastic at the top! This is the only elastic waist of anything, including underwear, I’ve found that doesn’t roll into my stomach and create a roll or muffin top. Nice wide and not too tight band around entire waist.

Q: Can these be worn just for day to day things? Or are they more for exercise?

Shorts are great for everyday wear
