This Man Needs to Be Recognized..
This book is more for the elementary or middle school person. It wasn't until Bill O'Reilly Legend and Lies series did I learned of his existence. Before the episode aired OR'eilly mentioned there would be a surprise by not showing his face until the first commercial break. If someone asked you about: "Wyatt Earp", ."Wild Bill Hickok" or Bat Masterson you would automatically know who they were. But if you were asked about a lawman who rode a white horse had a Native-American assistant, and used to disguises to catch his quarry if you were to answer "The Lone Ranger: you would be incorrect. Bass Reeves was not only longer but the others were amateurs by comparison. Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua where are you?

Excellent true story of Bass Reeves, Deputy US Marshall
I am a primary school librarian and read to the kids in 1st and 2nd grades weekly. It is often challenging to find books that appeal to the boys in this age group that not only they will enjoy, but present an inspiring and heroic figure. This true story of Bass Reeves who rose from slavery to become a Deputy US Marshall under Judge Isaac Parker has proven to be a great choice. When I read the book to them, it held their complete attention and everyone, boys and girls, want to check it out all the time. Bass Reeves was an inspiring figure and the kids have responded to his story. We need more books like this. I can highly recommend it for the younger grades, probably 1st to 4th grades.

Bass Reeves Story
I expected a "book-sized book" - but it's huge. If you're reading to a pack of kids and need to hold up the book so they all can see, this is a good one for that! It's well written, and the artwork is fine. But the older children in our family are a bit stuffy about reading books that look like a "kids" book. (I wish they'd publish this one in a smaller version! The information is great!)

We need a Morgan Freeman movie about this guy
Bass Reeves is an amazing hero who did good work in bad times. I'm giving this book to my nieces for Christmas because I think it's important for all Americans to have images and information about him. I hope it'll help crowd out some racist myths. I do wish the story managed to be as exciting as his life must have been. I guess it's not that easy to plot a long life of doing the right thing into a short book. But in the right hands it could be a great movie. Maybe with Dave Eggers writing the script and Clint Eastwood directing Morgan Freeman.

Valuable historical picture book with amazing art. GREAT!
The art is stunning! And the story riveting. The original Lone Ranger was a black Deputy Marshall named Bass Reaves. His story is true and delightful. He got the bad guy every time, even when it was his own family member! Little kids will love it, but I also read it to my 8th graders and they adored it too!

Legend
Great book full of colourful pictures, you can quickly read through and learn about this lawman unknown in modern times but a legend in his time, the story of an escaped slave who become a fearsome us marshall in the time of the real wild west. While this book is not a in depth study of Bass Reeves it gives a good look at the life of this man.Ideal for children or teenagers or anyone else intrested in the real west and not the fiction you see in the movies,as this book is based on real fact.

Too Short
quite a good book, but much too short, not much inside information there, or real history.

Good for a kid's book
Good for a kid's book. Great for a kid's book. But I had expected a 200 pager at least. And it is not.
