CHARLIE CHAPLIN: THE MUTUAL COMEDIES (Limited Edition 2-Disc Blu-ray Edition)Charlie Chaplin entered the film industry in 1914 and by 1916 was the highest paid entertainer in the world after signing a contract with the Mutual Film Corporation for a salary of $670,000. Mutual built Chaplin his very own studio and allowed him total freedom to make 12 two-reel films during a 12-month period, which have been brought together for the first time on this two-disc box set. Chaplin subsequently recognised this period of film-making as the most inventive and liberating of his career. These twelve films demonstrate the breadth of Chaplin's abilities as both a physical slapstick actor and a subtle, endearing character actor. The collection includes the slapstick custard pie fights of Behind the Screen and his first minor masterpiece, The Vagabond, where he successfully combines pathos and comedy to create a lyrical love story.p> This limited edition Blu-ray collection of Chaplin films has been fully restored and features music by acclaimed silent film composer Carl Davis. Special features: 12 films (1916-1917) with Carl Davis score, all presented in full High Definition: The Floorwalker, The Fireman, The Vagabond, One AM, The Count, The Pawnshop, Behind the Screen, The Rink, Easy Street, The Cure, The Immigrant, The AdventurerAlternative scores for each film by a range of composersAudio commentaries for all 12 films Newsreel shorts: Chaplin Signs the Mutual Contract(1916, 30 secs); Charlie on the Ocean (1921, 5 mins)Carl Davis interview (9 mins)Extensive booklet with essays and full film credits

Just get it
I already had the BFI DVDs so was hesitant before buying this new set of the same films. So glad I did, the picture is now the complete screen as originally projected 100 years ago and the facial expressions and incidental details are so much clearer. Another great improvement lies in the restoration of the original inter titles and of their proper pacing. Just one example: in The Floorwalker the previous DVD skipped the frames showing us the contents of the note received by store manager Eric Campbell upon his first appearance. We only saw it being crumpled in his hand and his extravagant reaction. Now we can read it clearly and thus know that the owners are instructing him that they are sending in the 2 detectives to investigate the disappearance of $80,000 - the money contained in the bag which spends the rest of the movie touring the store. The commentaries are fascinating and the choice of soundtracks adds new dimensions to each film. The only disappointment is that it does not include the documentary "Chaplin's Goliath" about Campbell, which is included on the equivalent USA set. Not docking a star for that, though. Don't hesitate, if you love Chaplin, this is essential.

Charlie Chaplin has never looked better!!
Well I wasn't expecting anything like this, I'm impressed with how these films have been restored, the picture is sharp the sound is great and the music is great, much better than just the annoying same piano soundtrack on a previous release that doesn't even match the scenario, I've seen a lot of modern movies on Blu Ray and they have been transferred terribly in HD but considering these movies are near enough a century old, the people that were involved in this...give yourself a round of applause...nicely done!!Highly recommended

The music by Carl Davis of these films are massively better than the out of sync compilations on Flickr Alleys ...
This collection looks nicer visually that the USA Flickr Alley version. I know as I own both sets. The music by Carl Davis of these films are massively better than the out of sync compilations on Flickr Alleys release. But most importantly the versions on this set are as full as the flickr alley set they have all the footage that the flickr alley version has.

Superb...
Superb restorations make it hard to believe that these films are just on a century old especially if, like me, you've only ever seen them in battered, sped-up prints. These have, of course, got wear and tear marks but the image is sharp and steady with nice contrast and a choice of music scores. Highly recommended.

Interesting to see these shorts
I'm really not chaplain fan, but there was one short I wanted, "the floor Walker" 1914. Transfers were fantastic considering the age of the films.Stuart J McKean
